What happens is that both biotin and B5 vitamin are absorbed by the same receptors in your intestines. Usually these vitamins are balanced so they cause no problems but when biotin is ingested in excessive quantities it’ll start to overwhelm those receptors, causing them to absorb less B5 vitamin than usual.
This can lead to a relative vitamin B5 deficiency.
B5 vitamin is important because it regulates the health of the layer of the skin where acne happens. By altering the chemistry of this layer breakouts can become more common and existing breakouts or condition like acne can worsen considerably.
Worse yet, if the protective barrier of this layer of skin, also regulated by vitamin B5, isn’t strong enough the presence of new or severe breakouts can lead to scarring.
What Can You Do to Keep Biotin from Causing You Acne?
The first thing you need to do is to be honest with yourself and the effects that biotin is having on your hair. If you’ve noticed no improvement whatsoever after a couple of weeks then just stop taking it, whether you’ve had breakouts or not. After all, why risk skin conditions for something that’s not guaranteed to work?
If, on the other hand, you’ve noticed obvious improvement on your nails and hair then continue taking it, but lower the dose to more manageable levels. You can also take a solid B5 vitamin supplement in order to reestablish the balance of these vitamins in your body.
